B. Mucho Cantina
Mexican Food in Seoul
By Micky Miranda
Considering the geographical distance between Korea and Mexico, Seoul surprisingly has a respectable number of Mexican restaurants. There are the popular franchise spots like Dos Tacos, Julio's, Tomatillo's, and On The Border. There's also Vatos (located in Itaewon) and Gusto Taco (formerly in Hongdae, now in Sangsu)--Gusto used to make authentic, quality Mexican food, but since it moved into its new, larger location, its sales may have increased, but the quality of the food has decreased. But I regress.
The best Mexican restaurant in Seoul is perhaps also its smallest. Nestled in a small alley in Yeonnam-dong, there lies B. Mucho Cantina. It is owned and operated by Julian---a Mexican who immigrated to Korea---and his Korean wife.
B. Mucho Cantina has been open since 2013. When it did open, Yeonnam-dong was still relatively quiet. "We only chose Yeonnam-dong because we lived in the area," says Julian. Julian is in his early thirties and is the main chef. He is originally from Mexico and met his wife when he was working in Las Vegas. By all accounts, he is friendly, energetic, and passionate.
"We didn't want to advertise or market," says Julian. His goal was for people to merely stumble upon B. Mucho Cantina. This strategy has succeeded in part thanks to the recent surge in cosmopolitan businesses in Yeonnam-dong. Like B. Mucho Cantina, there are a number of restaurants and cafes that have an international flavor. (Check out our Seoul Spots: Yeonnam-dong page for more information.)
"We only chose Yeonnam-dong because we lived in the area."
Julian has attempted to create a cantina-like vibe. The music, cutlery, and furniture are all modeled after cantinas in Mexico. Most importantly, the food that can be found in B. Mucho Cantina is amazingly similar to that which can be found in authentic cantinas in Mexico.
Every dish is fresh, tasty, and just melts in your mouth. The Enchiladas are served with fresh cilantro and two pieces of white bread (to wipe off the amazing sauce that comes with it). If you are sharing a burrito with friends, they will serve it naked and open. For hot sauce lovers, 'Cholula' is in stock and ready to be doused on all dishes (although it isn't needed).
They also serve quesadillas and a few other Mexican staples (e.g. tacos and tostadas). And of course, B. Mucho Cantina has a good drink selection that features a few Mexcian favorites (not just Tequila and Corona).
As is usually the case, words cannot do justice. You will just have to judge for yourself. Keep in mind that seating is very limited. You will most likely have to give your name and wait. If you go on weekends, there is a local artisan market nearby. There are also a few local bookstores, as well as a fresh-juice bar (which you can read about on our aforementioned Seoul Spots: Yeonnam-dong page).

How To Get There
There is a more quiet and scenic route that begins at Gyeongui Line Forest Park and snakes through the backstreets of Yeonnam-dong. However, it is a little difficult to navigate. You should try to do so yourself. Don't be afraid to get lost. Thanks to some of the interesting backstreets, getting lost in Yeonnam-dong is a good place to get lost.
Here is a more straightforward route:
From Hongik University Station, Exit 2:
-Walk straight and along the same sidewwalk for about 640 meters. You will reach a small alleyway on your left. Take a left at Seongmisan-ro.
-Be warned: there are two Seongmisan-ro roads. You want to take a left onto a one-lane, small alleyway. Do not go down the 2-lane street.
-After you take a left, walk straight for 50 meters. B. Mucho Cantina will be on your left.
